Cheadle & Gatley Football Club, has applied for a licence to sell alcohol throughout the week at their club house, a building immediately next door to Bolshaw Primary School.
We object strongly to this application on behalf of the school, the governors, the parents, the children and the local residents. It is no secret that venues who sell alcohol will very often have to deal with anti-social behaviour, issues of public nuisance and, regrettably, incidences of crime and/or violence.
With this in mind we have to ask why a sports club needs a licence that runs from 13.00 hours Monday to Friday, in addition to weekend opening? Surely an evening or weekend licence is more appropriate, and certainly less likely to encourage excessive intake midweek?
Our main concern of course is the protection from harm for the children attending our school. It seems fundamentally wrong that our children could be on the school grounds a few metres away from people partaking in alcohol. To see and hear such behaviour would be incredibly distressing for many of them, and we can see no guarantees in the application that this would not happen.
We also have to consider the large number of families and children who walk home past the club, whose entrance is adjacent to our school field. The vehicular entrance to the club and sports field has somewhat restricted views, and from a safety point of view we have concerns over increased traffic in and out of the site and parking on Cross Road itself which is not a wide thoroughfare. A number of our children walk home from school without adult supervision, and their safety and wellbeing is of utmost concern. Again we must flag our worries over children observing adults drinking alcohol at this time.
We want to register our strong objection to the granting of a
licence for the provision of alcohol at the club before 18.00 hours
while children are attending Bolshaw Primary School as part of
their regular day or during after school provision, and ask the
council not to grant the application.
