Decision:

The Executive Councillor (Communities & Sustainability) has approved the allocation of additional resources for investment in play and a strategic review of play areas as outlined in section 3 of the report accompanying this decision.

At the Environment & Economy Scrutiny Committee meeting of 31 July 2014 the 2013/14 outturn position for the Communities and Sustainability Portfolio reported a surplus of £0.442m, of which £0.305m related to the Place Directorate.  The Executive Councillor (Communities & Sustainability) requested that officers look into how the portfolio could utilise some of the surplus to make an immediate investment in play following the removal of equipment with non-compliant safer surfacing.

Officers reviewed the 16 play areas affected previously, considered other play sites that have known safety concerns and also taken into account the likely recommendations of a strategic review of play area provision and proposed investment at sites listed at 3.2 in the report.
