Unintentional and deliberate injury in 0
– 17 year olds is a key indicator in the public health
outcomes framework. The local authority has ownership of this
indicator.
The report does the following:
• gives an overview of key trends
• summarises national guidance
• reviews the current position
• outlines future plans.
The rate of unintentional and deliberate injury in 0 – 17
year olds rose in 2013 / 2014. Prior to then there was tentative
evidence of a downward trend. The rise was primarily caused by a
rise in admissions due to unintentional injury, especially falls.
The rate is especially high in early years and is significantly
higher in Stockport’s most deprived areas. Rates are
significantly higher than the England average.
The cost to the economy of accidents is huge and numerous reports
have recommended sustained and co-ordinated action to reduce their
number. Preventing unintentional and deliberate injury is a key
element of the public health team’s business plan. A child
injury prevention co-ordinator has recently been appointed. The key
elements of the role will be to:
• Develop the role of relevant stakeholders
• Develop the existing home safety equipment scheme
• Develop training for the workforce and parents
• Develop and co-ordinate plans in relation to early years and
school age children
• Develop a communication plan.
