Excessive vehicle speeds on Lindfield Road, particularly near the railway bridge, pose a serious danger to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers due to limited visibility and short stopping distances. Despite community concerns, the council’s current approach of extending hazard lines does not effectively reduce speed or improve safety.
Research from the UK Department for Transport and various local authorities highlights the effectiveness of speed bumps in reducing speed-related accidents:
Speed bumps reduce vehicle speeds by 40-60%, depending on their
design.
Areas with speed bumps have seen up to a 44% reduction in
accidents.
Unlike hazard lines, speed bumps physically force drivers to slow
down, making them the most effective speed control measure.
Similar measures in other residential areas have significantly
improved road safety and reduced the risk of collisions.
Many local residents have witnessed speeding incidents firsthand
and strongly support the installation of speed bumps as a necessary
safety intervention. We urge Stockport Council to take immediate
action to prevent potential accidents and improve safety for
everyone using Lindfield Road.
