The Director of Strategy submitted a report (copies of which had been circulated) providing an update on the One Stockport: One Future work and seeking feedback on the proposed approach to delivering this work.

 

The following comments were made/issues raised:-

 

·         Members welcomed the inclusion of clean, green transport as an ambition and commented on the need to connect local areas and communities within the borough through public transport and the benefits that this would have.

·         Members highlighted the importance of the long term vision and key themes shared in the update. It was reported that external partners had responded positively to the ambition shown and it was hoped that this would continue to gather support.

·         Members expressed their thanks to officers and Members for the ongoing work and reiterated the importance of collaborative working in future.

·         It was queried how the plan would address changing patterns of residential and employment habits, with many residents working outside of the borough and highlighted the need to work alongside neighbouring authorities.

·         In response, it was stated that ongoing consideration would be given to creating jobs within the borough alongside new homes. Furthermore, it was agreed that partnership with other local authorities was important and that the update would serve as a pitch to other authorities to encourage engagement.

A representative of the Assistant Director for Legal & Democratic Governance submitted a report of the Director of Strategy (copies of which had been circulated) providing an update on the One Stockport: One Future work and sought feedback on the proposed approach to delivering this work.

 

The following comments were made/ issues raised:

 

·         Members welcomed the report and noted than the plan was reliant on the council receiving funding from government.

·         It was also noted that the breadth of educational provisional would be factored into the plan; this included SEND provision.

·         It was felt that homes were needed borough-wide, and that house building should not be confined to town and district centres.

·         The plan was expected to be formally adopted by council in March 2024.

 

RESOLVED – That the report be noted.

A representative of the Assistant Director for Legal and Democratic Governance submitted a report (copies of which had been circulated) describing the Neighbourhoods and Prevention Programme.

 

The following comments were made/issues raised:-

 

·       Marple was thriving, however, was at risk of becoming more isolated from Stockport town centre as a consequence of the limits of and cuts to public transport and did not receive funding from the Bee Network as this was an urban fund.

·       Members expressed a desire to protect the green belt in favour of developing on brown space.

·       The ambition of the plan was well received.

·       It was noted that Marple residents were invested in the area they lived in and benefitted from the involvement of well-informed stakeholders with whom members engaged.

·       Members expressed a need for the plan to target pockets of deprivation and address issues such as lack of access to services for residents.

The Director of Strategy submitted a report (copies of which had been circulated) providing an update on the One Stockport: One Future project work and sought feedback on the proposed approach to delivering this work.

 

The following comments were made/ issues raised:-

 

·         Members referred to the unequal areas of the borough in terms of affluence and asked about the council’s plans to level up and target inequality.

·         In response it was stated that a response to inequality had been introduced in all areas across the entire project. Invitations had been issued to community groups to work with the council and the data team was assessing the key metrics and how success would be measured.

·         Members welcomed the council’s ambition to bring the Metrolink network to the borough.

·         Members also welcomed the roll-out of family hubs across the borough.

The following comments were made/issues raised:-

 

·       No matter where they are located in the borough residents should have access to green spaces as the importance this has on life expectancy was key.

·       All cycle lanes in the borough could be joined together to make cycling a safer and more appealing option.

·       The largest obstacle to the implementation of the suggestions in the report would be obtaining funding and resources.

·       The report should not follow a ‘one size fits all’ approach as not all residents would want the same outcomes.

·       Tackling inequality in the borough should be key to the One Stockport: One Future work.

The following comments were made/ issues raised:-

 

·         Member welcomed the report, in particular its strategic look at the east of the borough.

·         Members queried what metrics would be used to assess how safe residents feel within their communities and homes.

·         In response it was stated that work would be carried out at a granular level within local communities to build a picture of neighbourhood profiles. In addition, improvements to engagement with local communities were planned.

·         Members suggested that more power should be given to local communities.

·         Members referred to the importance of transport networks between communities within the borough.

 

RESOLVED – That the report be noted.
