Extension of a Public Space Protection Order to deal with car cruises

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Communities & Housing

Decision status: For Determination

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Decision:

The Cabinet Member for Communities & Housing has given approval to the extension of the existing Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to prevent car cruises for a further three year period.

The Public Space Protection Order was introduced in March 2017 and has been successful in dealing with problems created by car cruises in Stockport. Gatherings of vehicles had previously taken place on a regular basis in Stockport. This led to increasing numbers of complaints about dangerous driving, anti-social behaviour, litter and noise nuisance. Since the introduction of the PSPO there has been a significant reduction in car cruising in Stockport.

There have also been a number of attempts to re-start car cruises. The PSPO has been effective in preventing reoccurrences.

The results of the consultation supported the extension of the existing PSPO for a further three years.
