Return Stockport Markets Heritage
Stockport's market has been in continual use since 1260 with the
Covered Market dating from 1861.
In 2006 the Covered Market received a £1 million Lottery
Funding Grant and was restored.
It is hard to believe the massive decline of the Market area
that has happened since.
There are almost no stallholders, the surrounding shops are all
shut down and footfall has seriously decreased.
This petition is requesting that Stockport Council make changes
that would encourage stallholders and shopkeepers to come back to
the market area.
Some opinions have been that rents and rates should be reduced,
pedestrianisation, free car parking and less supermarkets in the
vicinity.
These are only a few suggestions.
As residents of Stockport we want our market heritage returned and restored and we would like the Council to strive to achieve this
