DRINKWISE: CHILDREN, PARENTS AND SCHOOLS - workshop pdf icon PDF 335 KB

Presented By: ALI WHEELER; DONNA SAGER; SIMON ARMOUR

Minutes:

Presentation by Simon Armour and Ali Wheeler

Summary of presentation including discussion of partnership working with schools.

Ali Wheeler CEX Drinkwise Northwest; bullet points covered:

How do we challenge the normalisation of alcohol?

How do we encourage people to develop a healthy relationship with alcohol?

What is the healthy relationship we would wish to have with alcohol in our schools?

How do communities role model alcohol?

How do we get parents to engage?

Any approach should be complimentary to work going on in the local area.  There was a wide ranging discussion regarding challenging norms and practices in schools e.g alcohol used as gifts for staff etc.  It was recognised that the programme needs to be part of a whole school response.  Using appreciative inquiries models schools can test out parents/governors views.

DM asked whether it would be more appropriate to target parents as opposed to asking the schools to put the lens on children within their schools.

ACTION: JM interested in putting Kingsway forward to be involved in a Drinkwise pilot; TB will take this to the secondary heads consortium; PB to take to Cathy Lyall for discussion.

AOB

Minutes:

JM raised the concerns about the massive issues with social media: online bullying; links to mental health; the LA and partners need to develop really clear messages about social media – how can we collectively make a difference?

ACTION: Social media discussion for next CTB agenda.

DM – LSCB noted that we no longer have an anti-bullying group meeting in Stockport any more. Is there a gap here that we need to address?

ACTION: CML/DS/PB to discuss at SMT and consider wider representation at the next CTB to look at this issue.
